Terms of sale
These terms cover buying from NZ Candles: one-off orders, gift orders and the candle club. Nothing in them reduces your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act or the Fair Trading Act, and where they conflict, the law wins.
Last updated 15 September 2026.
1. Who you're buying from
NZ Candles is a trading name of Kauri Ridge Holdings Limited, NZBN 9429050000017. Our address is Level 1, 12 Kōwhai Lane, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021. Reach us at hello@nz-candles.co.nz.
We are a retailer. We buy candles wholesale from New Zealand makers and resell them. We do not pour, relabel or repackage anything, and the maker's own labelling stays on the product.
2. The shop isn't open yet
At the time of writing, nothing on this site is offered for sale and no payment can be taken. Where these terms describe orders, shipping or the club, they describe how it will work when it opens. Joining a waitlist creates no contract, costs nothing and obliges you to nothing.
3. Prices and GST
- All prices are in New Zealand dollars.
- Prices are shown including GST where we are GST-registered. If we are not registered, prices say so and no GST is charged.
- Delivery is shown separately at checkout for one-off orders, and is included in the price of the candle club.
- If a price is obviously wrong (a decimal point in the wrong place, say), we may cancel the order and refund you in full rather than hold you to it. We'll email you if that happens.
4. Orders
Your order is an offer to buy. It's accepted when we email you a confirmation, and a contract exists from that point. If something you ordered turns out to be out of stock, we'll email you and refund that line rather than substitute a different candle.
Payment is taken through Stripe's hosted checkout. We never see or store your card number. Apple Pay and Google Pay are handled by Stripe on the same page.
5. Delivery
We deliver within New Zealand. Rates, dispatch days, the free-delivery threshold and the rural surcharge are set out on delivery and returns and form part of these terms. Rural delivery is a shipping option you select at checkout: Stripe cannot detect a rural address for you.
We give dispatch days, not delivery dates. Once a parcel is with the courier, its timing is out of our hands, though the risk of loss or damage in transit stays with us until you receive it.
6. Gift orders
- Your gift message is printed on a card, up to 200 characters. Emoji won't print.
- "Leave prices out of the box" is on by default, and there is no invoice in the parcel.
- The receipt and any order emails go to you, the buyer, and not to the recipient.
- Any refund goes to the person who paid, never to the recipient.
- A timing note is a request, not a guarantee. We'll tell you before we dispatch if we don't think we'll make it.
7. The candle club
- The club is a monthly subscription billed by Stripe on the same day each month until you cancel.
- Each month we choose a candle from a New Zealand maker against the scent preferences you gave us.
- Delivery is included in the price.
- You can cancel at any time from the customer-portal link in every club email. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the month you have paid for; we don't refund a box that has already been dispatched.
- You can update your card and your delivery address in the same portal.
- If a payment fails, your membership isn't cancelled: we hold that month's candle until the payment goes through.
- We'll email you at least 14 days before any change to the price, and you can cancel before it applies.
8. Returns, refunds and your rights
- Faulty, unsafe or not as described:the Consumer Guarantees Act gives you a repair, replacement or refund. We won't ask how long ago you bought it before we honour that.
- Damaged in transit: email us a photo within 7 days and choose a replacement or a refund.
- Change of mind:unused and unopened, within 14 days, with return postage at your cost. A burned candle can't be returned for change of mind.
- Refunds go back to the card that paid, usually within a few working days of us receiving the return.
Nothing here limits the Consumer Guarantees Act or the Fair Trading Act for consumer purchases. If you are buying in trade, those Acts may be contracted out of, and any such agreement would be made separately and in writing.
9. Burning candles safely
Candles are an open flame and are sold on the basis that you burn them safely: never unattended, never near anything that can catch, out of reach of children and pets, on a heat-proof surface. We print those points on a card in every box and set them out on candle care and safety. We're not liable for damage caused by a candle burned contrary to that advice or the maker's own instructions, which doesn't affect your rights if the product itself was faulty.
10. This site's content
Guides, tables and photographs on this site are ours unless they're credited to someone else. Maker names, logos, product photos and descriptions belong to the makers, and are used with permission where they appear on a product page. You're welcome to quote a short passage from a guide with a link back.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version that applies to your order is the one published when you placed it, and the date at the top of this page tells you when it last changed.
12. Law
These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.
13. If something goes wrong
Tell usfirst — most things are fixed in one email. If you're not satisfied, Consumer Protection (consumerprotection.govt.nz) explains your options, including the Disputes Tribunal.
