The delivery trap

A $27 candle with $10 of shipping is a $37 candle. Free-shipping thresholds across the makers we checked run from $40 (Candle Crush) through $99 (Amberjack), $100 (Living Light, Lucy King), $120 (Earth Candles, National Candles) to $125 (NŌLA). If you're buying one candle as a gift, the maker with the lowest threshold may well work out cheaper even if their candle costs more.

Timing matters too, and only one maker we checked publishes it: Candle Crush says next business day to the North Island for orders placed before 10am Monday to Friday, 2 to 3 business days to the South Island, and one extra day for rural addresses. Everyone else, ask before you order if there's a date attached.

Who is a candle a good gift for?

Someone whose taste you don't know well. A candle in a scent family they've mentioned liking is safer than most things at the same price.
A thank-you or a host gift. The $7 to $30 range does this without being awkward.
Someone who already burns candles weekly. They'll notice the difference between a 250ml and a 360g jar, and they'll appreciate a maker they haven't tried.
Long distance. Glass ships fine when it's packed for it, and a candle doesn't need to be the right size.

Who it's a bad gift for: anyone who's told you they're sensitive to fragrance, and anyone with a new baby or a cat that jumps on benches. A dinner candle or an unscented beeswax candle is the version of the gift that still works.

Making it arrive like a present

Send it to them, not to you. Almost every maker's checkout takes a separate delivery address. Put the recipient's, not yours.
Ask for the prices to be left out. Some makers do this by default and some don't. If there's an order-notes field, use it.
Write a note. A gift-message field is the difference between a parcel and a present. If the maker doesn't offer one, order it to yourself and post it on.
Check the scent isn't a landmine. Sandalwood, tonka and heavy sweets divide people more than fresh or floral.
Give it a week. The one published dispatch promise we found is next-business-day, and that's from one maker in the North Island.
