When do I need to order a candle to get it by Christmas?
Earlier than the courier cut-off, because the maker has to pack it first. NZ Post's own page puts the last recommended sending dates for 2026 at Thursday 17 December for domestic mail, Friday 18 December for Courier Economy and Tuesday 22 December for overnight courier, and says to allow up to three additional working days for rural delivery. Small makers pour and pack by hand, and December is their busiest month.
| Service | Last recommended sending date |
|---|---|
| Domestic mail | Thursday 17 December |
| Courier Economy | Friday 18 December |
| Courier (overnight) | Tuesday 22 December |
| Rural addresses | Allow up to 3 additional working days |
From NZ Post's 2026 key sending dates, read 9 October 2026. NZ Post says the dates may change; check their page in December.
The only maker we checked that publishes its own dispatch promise is Candle Crush: next business day to the North Island for orders placed before 10am Monday to Friday, 2 to 3 business days to the South Island, and an extra day for rural. For anyone else, ask before you order if it has to be there for the 25th — and aim to have it ordered in the first week of December.
What makes a good Christmas candle?
- A scent people expect at Christmas, done lightly. Pine, spice, citrus and berries read as festive; very sweet scents divide a room in a New Zealand December.
- A size that suits summer. Christmas here is warm and windows are open. A mid-size jar in a living area works better than a big candle fighting a sea breeze.
- Something for the table. Tapers and pillars on the Christmas lunch table are the most traditional candle of all — National Candles sells beeswax tapers from $1.50 and pillars from $11 (our beeswax guide).
- Made here. A candle with the maker's town on the label makes a better present than an imported one with a festive sleeve. How to tell it's really NZ-made.
Where can I buy NZ-made Christmas candles?
Direct from the makers. Our list of NZ-made candle makers has eight, each with where they say they pour, the wax they use and their free-shipping threshold. Seasonal scents come and go, so we don't list which maker has which Christmas scent this year — their own shop is the place to check. Thresholds run from $40 (Candle Crush) up to $125 (NŌLA), so if you're sending one candle, the maker with the lowest threshold may be the cheaper option overall.
What's a good Christmas candle gift by budget?
Under $10 buys a plain taper or a Wellington-made Seven Hour Candle as a stocking filler. Around $25 to $40 buys a standard scented candle from most New Zealand makers. $55 to $70 buys the large jars with 65 to 80 published burn hours. Our candle gift guide has the full breakdown with links, and our gift boxes put more than one maker in one box once they're running.
Can I send a candle as a gift straight to someone?
Yes. Put their address in the delivery field at the maker's checkout, and use the order notes to ask for prices to be left out and a message included. Not every maker offers a gift-message field. If it's going rural, add those extra working days to your timing.
Frequently asked questions
What's the last day to order a candle for Christmas delivery in NZ?
NZ Post's last recommended sending dates for 2026 are Friday 18 December (Courier Economy) and Tuesday 22 December (overnight courier). The maker has to pack it before that, so order in the first week of December to be safe, earlier for rural addresses.
Do NZ candle makers do Christmas scents?
Many make seasonal scents, but ranges change each year and we only publish what we've read on a maker's own page. Check the makers on our NZ-made list directly.
Can I get a candle delivered to the South Island before Christmas?
Yes, with time to spare. Candle Crush, the one maker we checked that publishes delivery times, says 2 to 3 business days to the South Island. Use NZ Post's cut-offs as the latest possible dates, not the target.
Can I buy a Christmas candle gift box from you?
Not yet. Our boxes need signed wholesale accounts with at least two makers. Join the gift box waitlist and we'll email you once when they're ready.
